Senator representing Cross River South Senatorial District, Asuquo Ekpenyong, has facilitated the disbursement of ₦40 million in grants to 400 constituents to support small-scale businesses and stimulate grassroots economic activities across the district.
The empowerment programme, implemented in collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), was held on Thursday at Channel View Hotel. Each beneficiary received ₦100,000 aimed at strengthening their enterprises and improving productivity.
Speaking during the event, Senator Ekpenyong said the intervention forms part of his ongoing efforts to promote entrepreneurship, reduce poverty, and expand economic opportunities within the senatorial district. He emphasised that supporting small business owners, particularly women and young people, remains key to achieving inclusive economic development.
According to the senator, the initiative aligns with the economic empowerment priorities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and complements the People First governance approach of Bassey Edet Otu, both of which emphasise enterprise development and improved livelihoods.
Ekpenyong explained that the SMEDAN-supported grants are designed to help beneficiaries expand their businesses, increase productivity, and generate additional income that will positively impact their families and communities.
Some beneficiaries who spoke at the event expressed appreciation to the senator for facilitating access to the federal support programme and ensuring that empowerment initiatives reach grassroots entrepreneurs.
One of the beneficiaries, Nsa Effiom, described the grant as a timely intervention that would help stabilise and expand his business operations. Another beneficiary, Benedicta Itayip, commended the senator for prioritising the welfare of ordinary constituents and creating opportunities for economic advancement at the community level.
Beneficiaries pledged to utilise the funds judiciously to grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
In his closing remarks, Senator Ekpenyong assured constituents that the grant programme is part of a series of empowerment initiatives planned for the district. He disclosed that preparations are underway for a larger intervention expected to benefit more residents across the seven local government areas of Cross River South.
The event attracted community leaders, stakeholders, and beneficiaries from across the senatorial district, many of whom described the initiative as a significant boost for small businesses and a reflection of responsive representation.
